Protect your WhatsApp from hackers

It’s a no brainer that WhatsApp messenger is a fantastic application to use for real-time communication, however, although the chat app calls itself fully encrypted, it doesn’t mean that some scheming individuals might not be able to slither into your account. If you ask me, getting your phone hacked is a complete nightmare.
It means that another person has unlimited access to your account and can do as they please. Worst case scenario, a hacker can start sharing sensitive information, like adult content to your contacts whilst masquerading as you. Damn! that’s something no one can recover from easily, though it’s just the tip of the iceberg of how harmful being hacked can be.
To spare you of the gory details, here are five tips to keep in mind to fortify your WhatsApp from marauding hackers.
1. Don’t click on any suspicious links
A key tip to keep in mind if you want to keep hackers at bay is by never clicking on links that you find fishy. I’d advise that you first know what the link is about from your contact before clicking on it. A great example to take note of is how Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos’s phone got hacked via a video file sent to him on WhatsApp. To cut the long story short, if one of the world’s most powerful man’s phone got hacked, this can happen to anyone of us as well.
2. Remember to log out of WhatsApp Web on your device
Most of us, including me, are guilty of never logging out of WhatsApp Web on our work computers. However, this is a very dangerous habit that hackers can exploit and get into your WhatsApp account easily. Whenever you don’t log out, anyone who will use your computer after you will be able to access your chat history, messages and contact list. So the best thing to do is log out from WhatsApp Web before closing your Web browser.
3. Tweak those privacy settings
Tweaking your privacy settings is always a good thing. Because WhatsApp is always unleashing new amazing features, users should always stay abreast of the latest updates on the chat app. The instant messaging application provides users with an option to choose who they want to share their details with. To do this users should change the privacy settings to ‘Contacts Only’. This means only a contact number you have saved in your phone will be able to see your status, phone number, and your profile photo.
4. Lock WhatsApp screen
The WhatsApp lock screen option which is available on nearly all android devices will ensure that no one else can open your WhatsApp account. Just go to the Settings menu, Privacy, and then select the Screen Lock option. You will then need to register your fingerprint. After the process is completed, you will have to scan your fingerprint every time you open the WhatsApp app. This adds an extra layer of security.
5. End-to-end encryption
All WhatsApp users should ensure that their chats are end-to-end encrypted. To verify that a chat is end-to-end encrypted, open the chat, tap on the name of the contact to open the contact info screen, and then tap Encryption to view the QR code and 60-digit number. WhatsApp end-to-end encryption ensures that only you and your contact can read the messages that are being exchanged and nobody in between, not even WhatsApp.
